Grade 9 Cree 11G – Fall 2022
This course will provide participants with the opportunity to develop and acquire the skills and knowledge to begin speaking the Cree language. Each student will be responsible for participating in a group setting and a one on one instructional setting to acquire language skills and build on those skills by use of the Transparent Language online program (external link). Students will be expected to master time management and self-discipline by allocating certain hours to the course. Attention will be given to the instructional strategies, lessons/units and use of the Transparent Language external site.
Prerequisite: None, but must have a Grade 9 standing (min.)
Grade 10 Ojibwe 21G – Fall 2022
This course will continue to expand on the language concepts taught in Ojibwe 11G and provide participants with the opportunity to further develop and acquire additional skills, knowledge, and practice to speak the Ojibwe language. Each student will be responsible for participating in a group setting and a one on one instructional setting to acquire language skills and build on those skills. The Transparent Language online program (external link) will be used as an additional resource. Students will be expected to master time management and self-discipline by allocating certain hours to the course. Attention will be given to the instructional strategies, lessons/units.
Prerequisite: Initial knowledge in Ojibwe language and recommended Ojibwe 11G with a Grade 10 standing (min.)
Grade 12 Applied Family Studies 40S – Fall 2022
Family studies courses offer a preventative, proactive, and practical approach that is intended to strengthen individuals and families. Students acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes to make informed choices with respect to caring for themselves and others within the context of a global community. Students acquire strategies to manage the challenges of life in an effective and responsible way that enhances their life journey. Grade 12 Applied Family Studies prepares students for a caregiving role with infants, toddlers, and children through the study of child development. The skills and knowledge are applied to a 40-hour practical experience with children where students will observe, guide behaviour, ensure health and safety, and participate in play-based learning experiences. This course provides a foundation for further study within the field of early childhood education and related careers.
PREREQUISITE – must be a grade 12 student and be able to secure, with a supervisor from the local school, a practicum opportunity at one of the following: licensed child care facilities, Junior/Kindergarten/Grade 1 classrooms, Aboriginal Head Start Centres, parent/child community and/or school-based programs, in-school on-site infant lab/nursery/pre-school programs, etc.
Prerequisite: Must be a Grade 12 student who can, with committed assistance from local staff, secure a suitable placement for 40-hour work practicum.
