High School Diploma
Independent Study Options
Flexible Learning for High School Success: Earn Credits Through Independent Study, Community Involvement, and Real-World Experience.
WVC offers Independent Study Courses, which provide students the opportunity and flexibility to study a selection of compulsory and optional courses from Grades 9 to 12. These courses begin with live student-teacher interviews to determine learning goals that will keep students on the path to success. Students can participate in and/or make contributions to their community by volunteering or engaging in an authentic paid work environment where they can develop essential and employability skills by providing documentation for activities in which they participate outside school. Students provide evidence of project completion to earn a credit toward their high school diploma. Course descriptions and/or previews are available.
Credit Recovery
- Various self-paced credit recovery options are available to students who have previously attempted but did not attain course credit. A minimum of 35% in the previous attempt of the course must be on the transcript.
- Each student will meet with a WVC Instructor who will facilitate the course and arrange scheduled appointments when requested.
- Although there are no live classes in the program, a WVC Instructor will monitor each student’s progress.
- Credit Recovery Program grading schemes are set up so that students must achieve a minimum average mark of 65% in the projects students are required to complete.
- The number of levels a student must complete is determined by their incoming Grade.
- If the incoming Grade is:
- Between 45% and 49%, students must complete 1 level.
- Between 40% and 44%, students must complete 2 levels.
- Between 35% and 39%, students must complete 3 levels.
- A WVC Instructor will exempt students as necessary once they have had the chance to choose their project from the available levels.
- Exemptions are not applicable from the included content levels if the student must complete all three.
