Science 10F

In the Grade 9 science course, students will explore the interrelationship of science, technology, environment, art, mathematics (STEAM), and society through scientific inquiry, technological problem solving, and decision making. The program consists of four units of study:

  1. Atoms and Elements: This unit covers historical ideas and models, common elements, atomic structure, the periodic table, families of elements, chemical formulas, and physical and chemical changes.
  2. Reproduction: Students will learn about mitotic and meiotic cell division, asexual and sexual reproduction, the structure and function of male and female reproductive systems, single trait inheritance, dominant and recessive genes, and the implications of biotechnology.
  3. Nature of Electricity: This unit explores early models of electricity, electrostatic phenomena, current electricity, sources of electrical energy, electric circuits, and household electrical appliances.
  4. Exploring the Universe: Students will study locating visible celestial objects, historical perspectives, apparent motion, scientific and cultural perspectives on the universe’s origin, major components of the universe, and Canadian participation in space research.

Assessment will be carried out through various methods, including projects, presentations, design of models, quizzes, unit tests, and labs.

There are no specific requirements, but at least a Grade 9 standing is required.

The Wapaskwa Virtual Collegiate student intake periods occur twice a year. Semester one intake is during the summer months of June through September. Semester two intake is during the winter months of December through February.
