Empowering Students for a Caring Future: Practical Skills in Child Development and Family Dynamics.
Family studies courses offer a preventative, proactive, and practical approach that is intended to strengthen individuals and families. Students acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes to make informed choices with respect to caring for themselves and others within the context of a global community. Students acquire strategies to manage the challenges of life in an effective and responsible way that enhances their life journey.
Grade 12 Applied Family Studies prepares students for a caregiving role with infants, toddlers, and children through the study of child development. The skills and knowledge are applied to a 40-hour practical experience with children where students will observe, guide behaviour, ensure health and safety, and participate in play-based learning experiences. This course provides a foundation for further study within the field of early childhood education and related careers.
Course Requirements
To qualify, you must be a Grade 12 student and secure a practicum opportunity with the supervision of a local school. Potential locations for the practicum include licensed childcare facilities, junior classrooms, Kindergarten, Grade 1 classrooms, Aboriginal Head Start Centres, parent/child community programs, school-based programs, or on-site infant labs/nursery/pre-school programs.
Eligibility
The Wapaskwa Virtual Collegiate operates under the authority of the Manitoba First Nations Education Resource Centre organization and provides educational services to its affiliated schools and First Nations. Search for affiliated schools under MFNERC and MFNSS in the search tool linked below.
Course Registration
The Wapaskwa Virtual Collegiate student intake periods occur twice a year. Semester one intake is during the summer months of June through September. Semester two intake is during the winter months of December through February.
